Masterclass

with Dario Mitidieri

05 Nov 2016 to 06 Nov 2016

The photographer:
Dario Mitidieri started his career at The Sunday Telegraph and The Independent. In 1989 he documented the student demonstrations in Tiananmen Square, for which he was awarded British Press Photographer of the Year. Visa d’Or, W. Eugene Smith and World Press Photo are among his most important awards and he has been recognised worldwide for his works such as Children of Bombay (published in six languages), Formula One driver Ayrton Senna’s last race, Children in Wars, Mass Graves of Iraq, Teenage Pregnancy in the UK and Lost Family Portraits, which received 3rd Prize at the World Press Photo 2016.

The masterclass:
Each picture we take reproduces our present and documents the birth of a past. Photography is a mediation between memory and reality. Anders Petersen suggests we use our memory to work on projects. “Photography is not really about photography - it is about longings, dreams, nightmares, and wants, and memories”. World Press Photo award winner Dario Mitidieri joins The Mango Lab for a unique event. This weekend workshop immerses participants in the street to create new work, receive analysis and tune in to what memories drive you to photograph as you do.

The Mango Lab is a visual arts and communications agency established in 2009. Working from their creative hub in Covent Garden they educate on photographic practices, implement art and media-based research and present creative and expository talks and workshops on and offsite to accompany cultural and corporate events, educational festivals and outreach programs. The Mango Lab also hosts an arts and culture online journal where instructive discourse is held with photographers and social media notables. The Mango Lab supports, motivates and assists individuals and collectives in that never-ending pursuit of the creative idea.

  • Please note that this intensive masterclass combines taught, discussion-based and walking components on both days and participants will need to bring suitable clothing in order to photograph in the urban terrain.
